BOSTON & SANDWICH "PEPPERMINT STICK" FROSTED & BRIGHT, GREEK KEY, ENGRAVED FLINT GLASS COMPOTE c. 1870-1887 . -- Standing approx. 6 1/2" tall & having a bowl rim diam. of approx. 8 3/8". -- No chips, cracks, or evidences of restoration. -- Similar "peppermint stick" pcs. can be viewed in Barlow & Kaiser's text on: THE GLASS INDUSTRY IN SANDWICH, vol. on "cut ware, a general assortment & bottles. Plates 5103 thru 5106. -- Compote has an applied red ribbon of glass to the bowl lip. This ribbon was then cut with slashes after cooling. Thus the name, "peppermint stick"! -- Bowl itself is frosted then engraved with a greek key design. Bowl applied to the stem while hot. -- Applied foot with a wafer connecting it to the blown hollow, airtrap stem. -- High quality FLINT GLASS for it rings like a bell when gently tapped with a fingertip. -- True victorian "art glass" manufactured at the great BOSTON & SANDWICH GLASS FACTORY, from 1870 to 1887.
